6.2
I have not made a Best X Litre engine since long ago, so for this one I give you a nice number. 6.2.
My choice for this is the very definition of German Muscle car engine. The 6.2 Litre AMG powerplant from either the SLS AMG or the C63 AMG. The German folks who put the enigne together and signed the plate at the top of the engine bay should be proud of this, very proud.
This engine earned its place in several great cars, but when fitted to the SLS AMG Black series it produced an astonishing 622 HP and 468 lb.-ft. of torque to the rear wheels! I seriously beilive it is the best looking car Mercedes has ever built, and the engine in it deserves to be in the holy trinity of V8s.
So tell me Opponauts, what is the best 6.2 Litre Engine?

No it's not. The hemi engine used two valves in a hemispherical-shaped combustion chamber. The new HEMI engines are just a brand name - the combustion chamber is not even close to what a real hemi engine looks like:

I know what a HEMI is, and why it has the name. The new combustion chamber is just an engineering decision to make the car perform better. I have a 5.7L "HEMI" myself. Just because the combustion chamber can't double as a tray for softballs doesn't mean it isn't a HEMI.
Frosted

I'm not talkin about turbos here. I mean a 100 horsepower 4 cylinder engine that's fuel economy oriented. And Dodge slaps some Hemi badges on it.
JGrabowMSt
> Frosted
06/16/2014 at 16:49 | 0 |
You say it as if having a Turbo negatively affects the fuel economy of the engine.
Jedidiah
> Demon-Xanth knows how to operate a street.
06/16/2014 at 16:52 | 0 |
They also made a 478 cubic inch (7.8L) v6 from this block and 702 cubic inch (11.2 L) v12 from this block. They also 637 cubic inch (10.4 L) V8 made from this block. Needless to say they are amazing. Most people didn't realize that GMC trucks had their own engine designs.
Frosted
> JGrabowMSt
06/16/2014 at 16:53 | 0 |
Well you already need premium which is more expensive and a negative in the eyes of someone wanting an MPG friendly car. Coupled with most turbos actually not helping fuel economy as it is. Maybe a low pressure tuned to act as though the car was N/A could help a little but not enough to counter the cost of the higher octane fuel.

The Hellcat's boost regulator goes up to 11.6 psi max, and the peak power RPM is 6000. The transmission is rated for 663 ft/lbs. Injectors are rated for 600cc, which is enough to support ~1400 HP at full tilt, so they're not limiting anything. http://www.allpar.com/mopar/hemi/hel…
If it can maintain ~50% of peak boost ( 5.8 psi) by the time it hits peak RPM, it will hit 600 HP easily. If it maintains ~75% of peak boost (8.7 psi) by the time it hits peak RPM, it hits 700 HP.
Since neither of these numbers blows the transmission rating at 6000 RPM, I have a feeling that they can keep up 6-7 PSI consistently, which means that unless it's very, very conservatively tuned it is at least 640HP. My guess is that problems keeping boost up against mounting heat is why they haven't released numbers.
EDIT: And putting the blower specs into this handy tool from the guys who made Engine Analyzer Pro yeilds a peak PSI rating of 17.5 on the stock pulley.
http://performancetrends.com/Calculators/Su…
Seems to me that the transmission is the weakest part of the engine.

Maybe if "regular" gasoline wasn't such a fallback for so many. Regardless, I do understand your point, but a lot of new cars are being tuned for midgrade 89. It's a way for manufacturers to get the higher power, but lower running costs that consumers essentially want to see.
No one seriously looking at buying a big engined car, or something as unique as a 4cyl HEMI would be such a brainless consumer*. Sure, it's a name, but do look on the other hand, at how many people put regular into cars that really shouldn't be getting it. They function. If an engine is supposed to sound like a can of nuts and bolts after 100k miles.
I think another thing is that turbocharging a car has become nearly synonymous with going for higher boost, and I don't get that either. Low boost is perfectly acceptable, and results in increased fuel economy for highway usage. Maybe a nominal difference around town.
*I'd like to hope this, but I also know that it's really unlikely to work out that way. We can all hope for something right?

> Party-vi
06/16/2014 at 17:10 | 0 |
At no point have I disagreed with you, I know what you're saying about the HEMI, and it's 100% correct. They simply aren't made like they used to be. That said, it's not a square cylinder head, it has a bit of a HEMI to it, and there's no rule in the book that it has to be a certain volume in order to be classified as a HEMI.
But dat 2 valve sound is quite nice. Regardless of how much of a HEMI it is.
